Abstract:

Field experiments were conducted during rabi season of 2008-09 and 2009-10 on clay soil at Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University, Annamalainagar to investigate the residual effect of cultivation methods and different nutrient management practices imposed to preceding rice crop on the yield, NPK uptake and economics of blackgram grown in rice-fallow blackgram cropping sequence consecutively for two years. The treatments imposed to rice in split plot design with two methods of cultivation (SRI and conventional) as main plot treatments and twelve sub plot treatments viz., three inorganic alone applied treatments(100 % RDF, STCR based RDF, LCC based N (Recommended dose of fertilizer P&K without basal N), nine integrated nutrient management treatments (STCR based IPNS, based on 100 % RDF two levels of fertilizer nitrogen (75and 50 per cent) in combination with two levels of N (25 and 50 per cent) through different organic manures viz., Farmyard manure (FYM), Green manure (GM), Pressmud (PM), Poultry manure (POM) as sub plot treatments. The residual effect of these treatments imposed on preceding rice in rice fallow blackgram yield, NPK uptake and economics were studied. The results revealed that, the maximum yield (seed -560.3,579.6 kg ha-1 and haulm - 1923.2,1981.0 kg ha-1), NPK uptake in seed and haulm (13.3,2.92,7.08 and 13.6,3.02,7.32 kg ha-1; 29.9,4.29,22.7 and 30.8,4.42,23.3 kg ha-1) and net monetary benefit(Net return of Rs.12,226,12,823 and benefit cost ratio of 3.26,3.37) were realized under SRI practiced plots over conventional method of cultivation practiced plots to rice which recorded lower yield (seed - 505.4,503.8 kg ha-1 and haulm - 1734.9,1787.0 kg ha-1), NPK uptake in seed and haulm (11.9,2.62,6.34 and 12.3,2.71,6.56 kg ha-1; 26.8,4.07,20.3 and 27.6,3.96,20.9 kg ha-1) and net monetary benefit (Net return of Rs.9,921,10,091 and benefit cost ratio of 2.63,2.64) in both years, respectively. Among nutrient management practices imposed to rice, STCR based IPNS (144:64:60 kg NPK ha-1 along with 12.5 t ha-1 FYM and bio-fertilizers viz., Azospirillum and PSB as soil treatment) registered more residual effect by recording the highest yield (seed- 675.8, 689.6 kg ha-1 and haulm - 2224.8,2291.6 kg ha-1), NPK uptake in seed and haulm (17.4,3.82,9.25 and 18.0,3.95,9.57 kg ha-1; 38.1,5.46,28.9 and 39.3,5.63,29.7 kg ha-1) and net profitability (Net return of Rs.15,480,16,015 and benefit cost ratio of 3.74 , 3.88), respectively during 2008-9 and 2009-10.
